Please note: since making this video I've done a lot of testing with students and have changed my typical recommendations on highlighting vs. writing paragraph summaries.

I now almost always recommend doing highlighting and NOT doing paragraph summaries (even from the beginning). I find that for about 9 out of 10 students, highlighting works just as well and takes up less time. Typically the only exception is if you try out highlighting for a while and still can't make it work. Then it might be worth trying paragraph summaries (but only if you can do them without adding too much time to your reading).
